While storefront massage centers may not be as abundant as Starbucks, it is clear that despite a slumping economy, massage therapy is growing in the Houston community.
The Houston School of Massage is an accredited massage school in Houston with classes for a 500-hour massage therapy training program beginning on Monday, October 19. The career opportunities for licensed massage therapists are abundant according to Jose Carillo, founder of Houston School of Massage, who notes that students have taken many paths upon graduation including opening their own practices or seeking employment with corporate wellness centers, health clubs, professional sports teams, spas, hotels and cruise ships or resorts.
"One of the trends we are noticing involves baby boomers and their commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle," said Carillo. "They are more inclined to seek massage therapy as a preventative measure instead of a response to pain or discomfort."
Students who successfully complete the massage training curriculum of the Associate Massage Therapy Program (AMTP) will be a licensed massage therapist in as little as 8 months. The Houston School of Massage program consists of 200 hours of Massage Therapy Techniques; 50 hours of Human Anatomy; 25 hours of Human Physiology; 50 hours of Human Kinesiology; 40 hours of Human Pathology; 20 hours of Human Health and Hygiene; 45 hours of Business Practices and Professional Ethics; 20 hours of Hydrotherapy and a 50 hour internship.
"In today's economy, massage is a great choice for a new profession," said Griffin Kanter-Kennedy, director of education. "The stress level in our daily lives has increased and we have known since the 1930s how stress negatively impacts the immune system. Massage is a very fulfilling way to help people feel better and stay productive. I like to say that massage therapists make the world better -- one body at a time."
